19Baskets is a community of Christian authors who are pursuing a new vision for writing, editing, and publishing. As part of that vision, 19Baskets is also a publisher for books that grow out of “gathered up fragments” of ministry.
So, I’m excited to announce that we have just published the very first 19Baskets book, That You May Know: A Primer on Christian Discipleship. This is my own book, and it was written to gather up the leftover fragments from a preaching series from 1, 2, and 3 John.
I’m excited about the book for a lot of reasons, but especially for three reasons in particular. First, I think That You May Know is an innovative kind of book since it is written both as an exegetical, close-reading study of 1, 2, and 3 John but also as a topical book on the subject of Christian discipleship. In other words, I wrote this to introduce people to what it means to follow Jesus by leading them through what the Apostle John teaches about the subject in his letters.
Second, I’m thrilled for the opportunity that this book represents. I plan on using this book again and again as I disciple people—especially new Christians. With this book, I have my best study, prayer, and explanations of the text preserved in a way where I won’t have to re-invent the wheel every time I want to study 1, 2, and 3 John with someone. Right now I’m leading a men’s Bible study at my church with this book, and it has been a wonderful experience.
Third, this book is (in large part) the project behind what shaped the vision for 19Baskets. It is this project that really gave shape to what I imagined 19Baskets could be—a place where Christian authors could actually product very high quality writing out of the preaching and teaching that they were already doing without needing to worry about whether they could sell a million copies of their books. I learned a ton in the process of publishing this book, and I hope to write more about the whole process soon, but I’m also learning a lot right now about how to promote a book effectively and faithfully.
